6 x 9

6 x 9 [branda]

(2019, 9’58”)

75 old photographs found in Hietalahti Flea Market in Helsinki in late August 2019 and bought for €60. 83 anonymous faces that look at us, sometimes out of the corner of their eyes, from the last century. Yet, the photographers’ names are still deeply printed in the cartons. The falseness of art — a woman’s photograph, a family’s photograph is taken to ‘immortalize’ them. After 150 years only the name of the photographer survives.

Who are these people found on the streets of Helsinki? Are they Finnish photographed by Swedish professionals, the ones who not long ago were the occupying power? Are they Swedish citizens sent to colonize Finnish territories? Is Finland absent from the equation and the pictures simply travelled across the Åland Sea for a reason unknown to us?

There can be no interpretation of these frozen lives. Only their size — 6 x 9 cm. And the time granted — 7.5 seconds.

Soft version — The photographs are mediated by the video camera, the faces soften, the grain dances, the hand is unsteady, the framing unstable. The portraits become alive. This is the poetic and warm version, ideal for visual pleasure.

6 x 9 [dura]

(2019, 9’58”)

Hard version — Cameraless version. The digitalized photographs went straight to the editing table. This allows for a much greater precision in focusing and framing, at the expense of the beat of life. This version, cold and scientific, may be of use for historical research — even reverses are more reliable here than in the soft version.

Installation version

Double screen projection of 6 x 9, side by side, which allows for a comparative analysis between the soft and the hard versions of the film.

It may also be projected onto two confronted screens where both versions face each other — in which case it is the body of the spectator that has to move and turn in order to carry out this comparative analysis.
